I could totally see myself getting into the same situation, trying to find humour to lighten up the tension, and getting the opposite effect. I actually did something similar when going on vacation last month. After handing my passport back, the customs agent asked for it back again, along with another piece of ID, and took it to an office down the hall, presumably to show their superior. After a few minutes of paranoid waiting, I turned to the long line waiting behind us and said "Sorry for causing the delay, but they seem to have some kind of problem with me. I don't know why, I've never been here before, maybe I just look undesirable. I may be getting back on the plane." A few people laughed, and one lady at our resort teased me a few times over it. But I can see now that it could have gone the other way. Probably best not to make terrorist jokes in airports.
