I don’t write a lot of political speeches, but since no one in Washington seems to be doing their job, I’m going to chip in.
I’m not fussy who gives the speech – last time I checked there were 28 Republican members of the Problem Solvers Caucus. As far as I’m concerned, any of them could give it. I’m assuming they all know Robert’s Rules of Order, which right now is where I’m willing to set the bar for the next Speaker of the House.
Here’s my rough draft.
“My fellow Republicans. In the most recent election, the voters of the United States chose to entrust us with majority control of the House of Representatives. This is a great honor and a grave responsibility. We were sent here, all of us, to conduct the people’s business, and there is a great deal of business to conduct. We are unable to begin this task until we have elected a Speaker, and a few of our members are obstacles in the path to our objective, to our country's objectives. Our work here involves, has always involved, negotiation and compromise. It cannot abide blackmail. In order that we can begin the people’s work, we’ve negotiated a compromise with the Democratic caucus to elect a member of our caucus Speaker, with the understanding that there are no quid pro quos, only an honest attempt by moderates from both parties to address the many issues where common ground is possible.”
We wouldn’t agree most of the time politically, but this one topic we would agree on. What a bunch of egotistical, goofy, jackasses holding up the speaker’s election.
I know my kids think I am an old, out of touch, conservative, fool! However, I have learned one thing in 77 years- it is much easier to borrow money than pay it back.
If people could have civil discourse, we would have a better world. Neither of us is entirely right or wrong. We have lost the art of civil debate in our government in most levels. Of course, when I was on the Montevideo City Council, I was the epitome of the same. Now I live in Rochester, and our grandkids make far more sense than any of the boards, commissions etc that I have served on over the years! Just turn this situation over to Brent and Al and there will be resolution. Don't
know about Brent, but I am a level headed Norwegian- snooze would run down both sides of my chin! My Dad didn't often have snooze but once when he did my brother and I sneaked some. We thought it was good to swallow the evidence- not a good idea!!!!!!!!
