I’m wondering if all the farmers around those parts knew how to weld. Just as most ladies around those parts knew what a thimble was for and could use one.
Sewing has the same inevitability - can’t help but collect scraps of fabric. Then you start quilting to use up scraps then you just have a smaller pile of scraps. In my advanced years I’ve learned to toss or give scraps to a quilter, ‘cause I don’t.

I know a couple guys who wouldn't have a welder because of the inevitable accumulation of scrap iron to clutter up the yard.
